Photographer's Diary
August 30th - Wednesday - Forest Hills and Auction Mart
Ken and Colin were old friends. Brothers born to work on a farm, had had enough
and decided to use their land for other devices. First a fishing lake, followed
by four wheel drive course, 9 holes of golf, a management training centre and
anything else people would pay money for. In spite of their move from farming
they still went down to the Auction Mart every Friday and the odd midweek sale
to have a lunch and talk to farmers. No longer interested in buying or selling,
they were still welcomed and enjoyed the chat.
It was a special breeds day at the Auction and I shot them as they hustled and
bustled for trade. I had been explained the poor state of farming in this country
by the Drinkhall's but Ken and Colin were even more pessimistic. But unlike
others who had just walked away Ken was full of new ideas and wanted to use
the Internet to help exploit new markets. Supermarkets had pushed the price
so low it was getting difficult to make a living, but Ken felt new technology
could help farmers fight back.
Returning from the Mart and a fattening but very tasty lunch. I shot some pictures
around the course and returned home.
