Photographer's Diary
The Mooney's - Monday 14th August
This was the first time I had been back to Ryelands since taking Mal Hussein's
portrait in January. I had missed a council meeting when the residents had stormed
the proceedings to make their case clearly heard. They did not approve of council
plans to bulldoze many of the houses. The estate had gained local notoriety
as a hothouse of trouble, and national fame for its racist attacks on the shop
keeper Mal.
Jason was an old friend from Nazareth House who now lived with girlfriend Lil
and three daughters. This was a day off after a long stint at work and a chance
to treat the kids. I sat around waiting for Lil to return with Leanne who was
receiving hospital treatment for a skin complaint. We walked the dog in the
rain on Ryelands park and marvelled at the dog's passion for jumping down a
slide.
After a simple lunch we used my car to go to Morecambe for a walk along the
jetty, a quick off the moment visit to an art exhibition and then onto the bowling
alley for a family game of ten pin. The children were in heaven, rushing around
and borrowing money off their father to play the attractions that surrounded
them.
The day was finished with a visit to McDonald's for hamburgers and milkshakes.
As the day wore on, so did tempers as the children pushed their luck further
and further. I dropped them off at night and escaped to the peace of my home.
