Lancaster's 'old' bus station - in the art deco style - was opened on 1 April 1939. Its new position required the clearing away of several streets, including Fleet Street and parts of Damside Street (the route of the old mill stream). Buses had originally stopped in Market Square but congestion had required a new site to be built.
