Ward 23, Lancaster Infirmary. Public health care has existed in the city since Dr David Cambell opened a dispensary opposite the castle in 1781. The dispensary moved three times before being located in it's current place in 1896. The hospital then opened a new wing in 1996 when it became part of The Morecambe Bay Hospitals Trust providing health care to a much wider area. It remains the biggest employer in the city.
