Photographer's Diary

Tuesday 26th September - Our Town at the Millennium Dome

The Millennium Dome had been plagued by disaster and my trip was soon to follow a similar vein. I had been tracking this event since January when a niece performed in Blackpool's story. This was Lancashire's day and a mixture of young people, including 7 from Skerton School were given a stage to perform a potted history of the county.

Like a true professional I had attended a dress rehearsal the previous Saturday in Preston and got details of the performances. I also had found out Bowerham School were going to be there for the day. A press pass was organised and train times sorted. The disaster started at Nuneaton when the train was first delayed for 45 minutes followed by another delay outside Euston getting me in 1 hour 15 minutes late. After a dash across London I turned up minutes before the last performance, only to find the schedule had changed and there was one minute left. I shot a few frames and that was it. I then could not find Bowerham school as I had missed our meeting time and my day was in ruins. I scoured the Dome shooting the odd picture and resigned myself to enjoying some of the attractions as I was starting to laugh at the whole affair.

Fortunately, I found the primary school at the last hour and got some pictures of them enjoying themselves. Heading back I started to think of returning again, but fortunately the pictures were OK, just about that is. The train home arrived 45 minutes late - and it was raining.
