The Centenary Congregational Church was built in 1879, formed part of Lancaster University when it first started in 1964 and now houses a fun pub. Ironically the church believed in total abstinence. During the soccer finals England were paired in the same group as their long term rivals Germany. In 1966 England beat Germany in the world cup finals in London. Ever since they have regularly been eliminated from major soccer competitions by Germany who have since proved to be a stronger side. Although England did not win any other matches in this competition, beating Germany was felt to be a major achievement. |
