Photographer's Diary

11th - 12th November Remembrance Day

I could not decide where to be, as every village and town in the district were to hold a ceremony. I started in Lancaster on Saturday where in Market square at 11 AM a two minutes silence was set to be held. The hour arrived and I felt somewhat guilty moving around to get my picture. Fortunately Darren Andrews, a local paper photographer had also shown and we felt comfort in the fact we were not alone. The minutes passed and people disbursed. I was amazed how quiet it was, though the pictures showed a different story.

On the Sunday I decided to head for Morecambe. As I got out the car and walked towards the memorial, the rain came from nowhere. My umbrella blew inside out and I was left to the elements. Casting the umbrella aside, I waited a few more minutes before reaching for my camera. The rain stopped and the parade started.

Following the parade into the square, I was actually aware of the fact I was being rude. You are never sure if there is approval of your presence on such occasions as no one smiles. This was apart from the young cadets who felt privileged to be in the shot. I met Nigel Slater, the head of photography at Lancaster and Morecambe papers. We had spoke many times, but it had been a few years since to were face to face. The weather and the emotion made strong pictures, particularly as the wind never ceased to blow a gale across the proceedings.
Following the service, I wandered along the prom and shot some pictures of wind surfers in full flow and the odd fisherman. It was bright but gusty.
